High levels of DON in Small Grains

Recently CVAS has been running a number of small grains (wheat, barley, oats, and triticale) for toxin evaluation. A high percentage of samples have been coming back positive for Vomitoxin (DON). Many of these results have been over 10 ppm and some over 40 ppm

It has been observed by looking at fermentation data and other nutrient characteristics of silages over time that the fermentation process often does not stabilize until four to five months after ensiling. The data from the 2009 crop year is consistent with this observation.
